Los verbos adverbiales se dividen en transitivos o intransitivos, según lleven o no objeto directo:
a) Verbos adverbiales intransitivos
Se clasifican en este apartado todos aquellos verbos frasales adverbiales que no llevan objeto directo y no admiten, por tanto, transformación pasiva:
to break down averiarse
to break out estallar (guerra, epidemia)
to come/go in/out/down/up/back entrar/salir/bajar/subir/regresar to get up levantarse
to go (a)round haber suficiente para todos
to run out acabarse
to set off partir, ponerse en camino
to take off despegar (avión)
He got up at seven o’clock Se levantó a las siete The car has broken down El coche se ha averiado There’s enough wine Hay vino suficiente
to go (a)round para todos
The money has run out Se ha acabado el dinero
We set off at dawn Partimos al amanecer
The plane will take off in a minute El avión despegará en un momento
b) Verbos adverbiales transitivos
Son aquellos verbos frasales adverbiales que llevan objeto directo y admiten, por consiguiente, transformación pasiva (v. 14.10):
to bring sb up criar, educara alguien
to brush sth up repasar (conocimientos), poner al día
to carry sth out llevar a cabo
to draw sth up redactar (documento, acuerdo)
to put sth on ponerse (ropa)
to see sb off despedir (a alguien que se va de viaje)
to take sth off quitarse (ropa)
to tell sb off regañar a alguien
I must brush up my English Tengo que repasar mi inglés
The football match has been put off El partido de fútbol ha sido aplazado We saw her off at the station La despedimos en la estación
Put on your new shirt Ponte la camisa nueva
He took off his jacket Se quitó la chaqueta
